Katie Lehn discovered her love for clay in Tucson, Arizona. She first studied wheel and hand-building at the Tucson Clay CoOp. She found this creative outlet quickly shift into a lifelong passion and found the urge to dive in deeper. In the midst of her classes, she also held a work-study membership within the community studio. Since moving to Austin, Katie has become an artist resident at Dougherty Arts Center. She's grateful for the opportunity to play with clay and create work that reminds her of her desert roots.
Artist Statement
Being raised on a mesa bordering Arizona and Utah with sandstone earth rich in waves of color, I've had my hands deep in dirt all my life. I've found my designs mirror the contrasting hues and textures from my desert roots: sand and sage, sandstone walls and glistening water, desert wildflowers and cacti skin, burning sun, and turquoise stones. I'm inspired by the fluid feel of canyon walls, layered earth, precious stones, and the subtle tones of the desert.
