Carrie Shannon

About the Artist

Carrie Loftis Shannon is a painter from Austin, Texas and works in Acrylic, Mixed Medium and Watercolor on both canvas and fine paper. She focuses primarily on color, fluidity and the emotions in which her paintings emanate. Themes of creation, humanity, duality, spiritual propensities, and the fluidity of emotion run through her works. Carrie Loftis Shannon attended the Weitzenhoffer School of Fine Arts on scholarship from the University of Oklahoma, while there she obtained a Bachelor's Degree with an emphasis in Modern Dance and Classical Ballet. Upon graduating, she was awarded the College's esteemed Buffalo Mask Award, celebrating the embodiment of a true artist. Carrie grew up painting from an early age and is a self-taught painter.

Artist Statement

Over the course of quarantine and the global pandemic, my focus has narrowed to the universal longing for joy, peace and contentment. My most recent work examines the human desire to connect - and the obstacles that create the widening expanse of separateness in the human condition. I find myself continually returning to worldly shortcomings directly attributed to existences separate from God. This separation manifests itself in the form of pride, selfishness, chaotic emotions, desires, and fears. I create to illuminate suffering, both internal and external. It is my hope to expose the viewer's relationship to humanity and reconcile our greatest emotional need - to be loved and love in return - pure, kind, unbiased, hopeful, empathetic, and connected love.

In order to produce raw and unfiltered emotional snapshots, I work with quick expressive mark making. This style alludes to a composition of choreographed fluidity of emotions with imaginative exploration attributed to as a performer. The brush strokes in my most current pieces are smooth, sensitive and even rhythmic, flowing on the canvas surface with a grace only attributed to that of a dancer. The use of vernal colors in an almost balletic composition becomes the vehicle to bestow a momentary breath of calm in a cultural time of unrest.
