Explaining the fundamentals of arranging a pleasing still life, with friend Jake Meeks.
Short behind the scenes peek at my newest work in progress, 48 x 48 inches, oil on panel.
Oil painter and tattoo artist for over 20 years, trained in the classical methods of Trompe L'oeil painting. After growing up and attending art college in the New Haven, CT area, I relocated to Austin in 2008 while continuing to pursue my artistic learning through atelier workshops in NYC, TX, and Europe. In addition to showing my paintings in various group shows and galleries domestically and internationally, I co-own Art Realm Tattoo & Gallery in Austin. Through a symbiosis of different mediums, my artistic practice informs and influences my tattooing practice, and vice versa.
Artist Statement
My paintings employ photorealistic illusion to create unnerving believability and unmask deeper truths of existence, whether depicting the beauty of nature in plein air landscapes or confronting the human condition in multifaceted still lifes incorporating the surreal and grotesque.
By bringing technical precision to a wide range of subject matter and unlikely juxtapositions, I urge the viewer to question familiar assumptions and pierce the surface of what we often take for granted.
