About the Artist
ICOSA is an artist-run non-profit cooperative gallery that showcases a diverse range of contemporary art and programming. Founded in 2015, ICOSA was originally located within Pump Project's former studios. In June 2018 ICOSA moved to nearby Canopy, East Austin's blossoming gallery and studio hub at 916 Springdale Road. The gallery houses track lighting, high ceilings, and 1500 square feet of exhibition space.
ICOSA is a network of artists committed to providing exhibition space free of the constraints of the traditional gallery model, as well as a platform for dialoguing with audiences. ICOSA's culture empowers artists to develop their creative and professional ambitions, continuously culminating in a wide range of events, from art shows to educational programs, as well as in cooperative partnerships with diverse organizations.
ICOSA's programming ignites ideas and relationships between the Austin and global art communities: compliments of its member artists who are producing some of the region's highest-caliber contemporary art and art discussion. ICOSA preserves a sustainable lifestyle for local artists and engages in dialogue with art lovers throughout the region and beyond.
Artist Statement
ICOSA Collective is proud to present Finding Necessities, a juried group exhibition curated by Sidney Mori.
Finding Necessities navigates the viewer through works of curiosity, resistance, healing, and imagination. Without curiosity we remain stagnant, without resistance we don't evolve, without healing we lack tenderness, and without imagination we cannot escape. These grounding gestures ebb and flow throughout one's existence, playing a role in the evolution of self. The eight selected artists: Alejandro T. Acierto, Yunkyoung Cho, B. Chehayed, LJANELLE, Kirsten Lofgren, LarRissa Rogers, Luis Vasquez, and Rodell Warner create works that speak to various pivotal moments of movement and restoration.
ABOUT THE JUROR
Sidney Mori is a curator, arts organizer, and artist based in Houston, Texas and graduated from University of Houston in 2016 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography/Digital Media. For three years she created work that was exhibited locally and internationally, including Alabama Song Art Space, Blaffer Art Museum, Art Licks Weekend and Wedge Gallery among others. It was from her experience of interacting with the arts as the artist and administrator that she then pursued the path that was true to her intentions, working with artists: creating, organizing, and providing platforms for artist's voices. Her curatorial practice acts through inclusivity, sustainability, mindfulness, and challenging the traditional, hetero-normative, white-centered art space. She is now Curatorial Assistant and Art Coordinator at Project Row Houses and curated Re.Migrant Parts 1 & 2 and Cause Number: 02-F-00151 for Project Row Houses Community Gallery space
