Austin Book Arts Center is a 5-year-old 501-C-3 educational non-profit. Before Covid-19, ABAC offered in-person workshops, including hands-on letterpress printing. ABAC members could rent studio time. As soon as possible, in-person workshops and studio rental will resume.
ABAC now offers Zoom classes for people of all ages. Bookbinding, book transformation, book repair, book cloth and book box making, zines for teens, DIY publishing, pop-up structures, printing, paper making, paper decoration, and photographic workshops are available. Kits for each class are mailed to the students. Literacy for all ages is part of our mission; free of charge age level designed book arts videos for kids are available on the website. When the Covid-19 pandemic is over, ABAC will again provide studio rental time for members, and in-person workshops for everyone. Third Thursday, monthly free programs will resume when it is safe. Please explore the website, and consider joining ABAC as a member or making a donation. Please share the word about ABAC's October/November GoFundMe appeal. Make a book that is all your own. Print images and text. Create and decorate paper. Books provide a direct interaction with their readers - no batteries required. Books are robust. Books Persist. https://atxbookarts.org
Artist Statement
Books are what you make them from Capital A Art to compost. Books don't care. You decide. AUSTIN BOOK ARTS CENTER opened its doors to book lovers in Sept. 2015. ABAC has offered over 300 workshops and participated in numerous outreach events throughout central Texas, spreading the good news of book arts to thousands.
The mission of Austin Book Arts Center is to engage people of all ages in creative, interpretive, and educational experiences related to the arts of the book. Before the pandemic, ABAC regularly offered workshops in letterpress printing, bookbinding, papermaking, typography, book history and design, and various arts of the book. In addition, ABAC provided free monthly 3rd Thursday programs. Members of ABAC had access to the traditional tools and equipment used in book production through the Open Studio program. We hope to resume the full range of services soon. Donations are appreciated. https://atxbookarts.org/openhappiness/
